Design Effective and Accessible Online Learning Environments in LMSs Using the Principles of UDL

We recognize that quality course design is instrumental toward supporting student success. That is, when an online learning environment is well designed, everyone achieves more, learns more, and is more equitably represented.

This course was designed to support you in designing effective and accessible online learning environments specifically using the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in the context of contemporary learning management systems. 

For the purpose of this course, we will use Canvas as the most popular LMS for examples, but will also provide links for "how to's" for the other top 2 LMSs (Moodle and Schoology). If you don’t use one of these four LMSs, it’s okay! The principles we advocate here are practicable in all modern LMSs. If you would like custom training and support for a specific LMS, please just let us know!

Explain basic theory (why, what, how) of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as pertains to online course design.

Use UDL principles and practices to design and develop highly effective online learning experiences including both asynchronous (e.g., Canvas) and synchronous (e.g., Zoom) aspects.

Apply concepts of UDL design and delivery in synchronous, virtual learning experiences.

About Your Instructor

Eric J. Moore, PhD is a UDL specialist, consultant, and evaluator via Innospire.org. He also currently serves at the UDL and accessibility specialist for the University of Tennessee, Knoxville where he is supporting the implementation and scaling of UDL on campus. Eric co-leads a UDL in Higher Ed Network, which is open for anyone interested in UDL in higher education to join.

Eric holds BA, M.Ed., and PhD degrees in education, and has over a decade of experience in the classroom including middle school, high school, and higher education and subjects including literature, philosophy, and teacher education. 

 

 

What to Expect

How the Course Works

  • Each module begins with a short video to orient you to the topic and lesson. 
  • As you navigate through the course, each module features key lessons accompanied by opportunities to dive deeper into the content by reviewing readings and resources. 
  • Following each lesson, you'll have the option to post to the discussion board,  interact with your classmates, and publicly reflect on your learning from the module. 
  • A final project, optional for all, a requirement for graduate credit
  • Receive your completion certificate for 45 continuing education hours or 3 graduate-level continuing education credits (as applicable).
  • Runs on the Thinkific platform. 

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites or required texts for this course.  All materials are linked freely within the modules. 

 

Pricing Options

Course Certificates & Transcripts

You will receive a completion certificate from Novak Education at the conclusion of the course. Please check in with your school or district to determine if this alone will be sufficient for salary points or advancement. Some states require additional proof of completion such as clock hours, contact hours, or credits. Graduate credits (3 continuing education credits) may be obtained through our university partners. Please check with your school or district to ensure these will satisfy their requirements prior to enrolling.
